This painting depicts the era when Diesel took over from Steam. Here is Southern Pacific Railroad’s engine no. 5600. This model GP9 was built by General Motors and was one of the first models produced in large numbers. No. 5600 is passing the roundhouse in San Jose, California with a train bound for San Francisco. The transition is in full swing as railroads take on the new technology.
