Denver & Rio Grande Western engine number 1701 is leading
a west-bound passenger train over the Colorado river. 1701 was
out-shopped in 1929 by the Baldwin Locomotive works. This locomotive
was one of an order of ten Northern type engines which the D&RGW referred to
as "Westerns". This image of 1701 depicts the engine after a company
rebuild around 1937. The railroad was very proud of these high
rollers. They sported dark green boiler jackets, silver trim and polished
side-rods. These 4-8-4's were in every respect "Grande Northerns".
